Signing Up

How do I sign up?

To create a user account, first select “Sign Up” near the top right of the page or click here. Choose a user name and password, both between 5-16 characters, using letters and numbers only.  Then provide your first and last name, email, and date of birth. Finally, hit the sign-up button.

Then, check your email for a confirmation and you’re ready to begin uploading videos and photos!

What is the minimum age required to sign up?

In order to be eligible to sign up, users must be thirteen (13) years of age or older.

Why can't I register with my preferred username?

An existing user is using the name you entered, and you’ll have to pick another.

I didn't receive the confirmation email. What do I do?

First, check your spam filters and/or junk mail folders to see if the email went to one of those places instead of your inbox. If you do not see it, then please fill out the help form below.

Logging In

What if I forgot my username or password?

Click on the “Forgot Username/Password” link on the login form or click here to have an email with your login information sent to you.

What if I have the correct username and password, but cannot log in?

YouNews™ launched a new registration system in January, 2009 as part of a planned upgrade. There may be some instances of users being unable to log in with their existing usernames and passwords as a result.
-If your username is less than 5 characters
-If you had multiple usernames registered under a single email address, and have already logged in with a different username in 2009, now you are limited to the one
-If another user signed up a new user account using your username.

If you are unable to log in for one of the reasons above, please sign up an account again using the same email you registered previously, and all of your existing user data will be transferred to our new system. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.


Submitting a Story

How do I upload videos or photos?

You don't have to include a text story with your video or photos,
but it does help others better understand the context around your media. To submit, locate the "Submit a story" link

Step 1: Submit your content. You can add one video and/or up to three photos in a single submission.

If you have a video clip, click “Browse,” locate your video clip on your hard drive, and press “Open.” Be sure to click “Attach Video” to begin the video upload process.

Allowed video files are .3g2, .3gp, .3gp2, .3gpp, .asf, .avi, .avs, .dv, .flc, .fli, .flv, .gvi, .m1v, .m2v, .m4e, .m4u, .m4v, .mjp, .mkv, .moov, .mov, .movie, .mp4, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .qt, .rm, .ts, .vfw, .vob, .wm, .wmv. Please keep your video file uploads to 100 mb or less.

If you have photos, click “Browse,” locate your photo on your hard drive and press “Open.” You can add a short caption for each photo if you would like.

Allowed image types are gif, jpg, jpeg, and png.

Step 2: Tell your story by typing in a headline and body text. Then select a channel that would best describe your story. You can also add a tag to make your story more searchable, as well as a location of where the story occurred underneath the “Additional Info” tab. Remember to read the Terms of Use. Click submit.

Once your submission is reviewed by our moderators (no violent, obscene, graphic or copyrighted material please), it will be posted to the Web site. It may take up to several hours for your video photo or comment to appear, so please check back.

What happens if my submission isn't approved?

You will receive an email if your submission was not cleared for posting, or in rare occasions, failed to upload properly.

What does it mean to "flag" something?

Even if the administrator approves your photo or video, other users may flag it for questionable content. If we remove your video or photo after reviewing it, you can assume that we removed it purposefully in accordance with our
Terms of Use.

What is prohibited in YouNews™ content?

    * No copyrighted material
    * No pornography, sexually explicit content, nudity or profanity
    * No depictions of dangerous or illegal acts (i.e. animal abuse, drug abuse)
    * No hate speech which contains slurs or the malicious use of stereotypes


How long does it take for my video and/or photos to display?

All submissions are moderated to ensure that stories are appropriate for posting. It may sometimes take just a few moments, but sometimes several hours. Your submission will always be moderated within 24 hours of submission, so please check back!

Something is wrong with my photos.

Some common issues are:
-Images are too small: For your next submission, try submitting a slightly larger image. Images should be 320x240 at minimum.
-Images display dark: If you submit very large photograph files, occasionally the photos will become distorted when resampled down for web display.
-Images are sideways: Please make sure your original photo files are oriented correctly before submitting!

Profiles

I received an error when I tried to save my profile updates. Why?

This happens when we've determined one of the profile fields was improperly formatted. Some possible explanations are:

-You've incorrectly formatted your name, email, or password reset fields.
-We've detected inappropriate text in your profile. Please keep it clean!

What's an avatar?

An avatar is a personal profile picture that displays as a thumbnail in your profile views. You can upload a .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, or .png file. Keep it clean, and no copyrighted images, please.

I received an email that my profile was flagged. Why?

Your profile was flagged as having inappropriate content, and after review, moderators agreed. Please log in, review your profile, and remove any content that may run afoul of the Terms of Use.

How do I delete my user account?

Mobile

Be our feet on the street and let your community know about news as it’s happening. Use your mobile device to upload videos and photos directly to YouNews™, from wherever you are! You must be a registered user to use this feature.

How do I enable my account for mobile submissions?

Step 1: Enable Your Account


Please note you must have a registered YouNews™ account to send videos and photos from your mobile device.

New Users
Register now for a YouNews™ account to get started. Be sure to include your Mobile phone number and the email account assigned to it, if applicable. You’ll receive a confirmation email at that address. Confirm your account by clicking on the link, and start uploading! (If you do not get a confirmation email, be sure to check your spam/junk folders, or please see the help section.)


Existing Registered Users

Log in to YouNews™. Click on your username at the top right where it says, “Welcome” to access your profile, and then click “Edit”. Enter your mobile device number and the email account assigned to it (if your phone allows one) and Save.


Step 2: Start Uploading


Send your photos and videos to upload@younewstv.com. Add this email to Contacts on your mobile device to make uploads quicker and easier!


Smartphone users
– Be sure to give your submission a title. This will appear along with your post.


All other phones
– Your uploads will appear with a default title of “Mobile Submission”


Adding comments or details:

After your submission has been posted, you can add comments to your upload to provide more details.

 

 

What can I send on my mobile device?

 
You can send one video and up to three photos, just like on the web submission form. Unlike the web form, however, only your media will be accepted; we will not be accepting associated text. If you want to provide additional context on your submission, please add it in the comments after your submission is posted.
 

How do I send my submissions from my mobile device?

 
Send your mobile submissions to: upload@younewstv.com. It may be helpful for you to save this as a contact in your mobile device.
 

How do I know if a submission is successful?

 
If successful, you will receive a confirmation email at the email address you provided when you registered your account. Your submission will appear after YouNews™ moderators have approved it (please note this may take several hours).
 

I received a "Submission Failed" notice. Why?

If successful, you will receive a confirmation email at the email address you provided when you registered your account. Your submission will appear after YouNews™ moderators have approved it (please note this may take several hours).
 
If you receive a text message returned to your mobile device noting that the submission failed, it is because you are not a registered user, or you have not entered your mobile device number (if your phone uses MMS messaging) or mobile device email (if you are using a smartphone such as iPhone, Blackberry, or others) under your user profile. Please make sure these two fields are properly configured to match your mobile device.
 

Special note on some Sprint phones:

Some Sprint phones follow an unusual process when sending MMS messages. Recipients of messages from these phones do not receive the media but instead a link to a Sprint website where the media can be viewed. We are unable to support Sprint phones that operate in this manner.

 

Copyright

We respect the intellectual property rights of others and we prohibit users from uploading, posting or otherwise transmitting any materials that violate another party's intellectual property rights. If we receive proper Notification of Alleged Copyright Infringement as described in our Terms of Use, we promptly remove or disable access to the allegedly infringing material and terminate the accounts of repeat infringers in accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

How can I tell if a submission is copyrighted?

Before uploading content, please be certain that you own the copyright to all content in your work or that you have the permission of the copyright owner to use the content. If all the content is created solely by you and does not contain material created by any other party -- or if the copyright holder has the otherwise authorized you to use that material -- you may upload the content (as long as it complies with our Terms of Use).

We cannot provide you with legal advice about whether you own the copyright to the material you upload or if you are authorized to use that material, so please consult an attorney to be certain of your rights.

Why was my content removed?

Your content was removed in accordance with the Terms of Use, which includes our content, copyright and privacy policies.
