The head pro at Newman Golf Course is teed off about the weather. Already this season, Dustin Martin has had to close the course 8 times. That's more days lost than in the last two years combined.
"It’s been a tough season so far, a tough spring," said Martin. "Too much water, too much rain, not very good weather."
Martin estimates that all of the rainouts have cost Newman roughly $18,000. And that doesn't count what they lose on days like this, where the course is open, but they can't rent golf carts because the ground is too soggy.
"When we get too much rain we can’t rent carts out, which drastically reduces our volume of players coming through. Carts going out probably accounts for our biggest revenue."
Head groundskeeper Marty O'Brien has to deal Mother Nature's consequences.
"We probably do 150 hours mowing a week on our turf out here," said O'Brien. "The last couple of weeks we’re struggling to get a third of that done. It’s become a real issue."
Newman has absorbed almost 7 inches of rain over the past month. That's about 3 1/2 more inches than normal. But when the course is open, Martin says, it rains dollar bills.
"The days we’ve been open where its been sunny business has been really good. The golfers come out and they’re ready to play. Its been a while since they’ve played and they’ve got the itch. The days we’ve been open it’s been very busy, so we should be able to catch back up."
It looks like Mother Nature is winning this round. And with her, you can't take a mulligan.

Oh gee, now they will have to raise the price, unless they already have.
