The Illinois Baseball team heads into the final weekend of the Big ten season a half game out of first place.
One of the reasons for the Illini's success is a former Limestone Rocket.
Brandon Wikoff has been a starter his whole career at Illinois. The Fighting Illini Shortstop played a different position his freshman year.
Illinois Shortstop Brandon Wikoff said, "My freshman year I played 3rd I wasn’t very comfortable there but they put me in there they thought I could do it. It worked out pretty well. Being able to get over 200 at bats as a freshman was nice. It’s kind of a comfort thing hitting as well. Now that I am back at shortstop I am a little more comfortable."
Wikoff leads the big ten in Hits and Triples and is in the top five in Runs and doubles. His bat has provided a big lift for the Illini.
Illinois Baseball coach Dan Hartleb said, "You always want to have somebody at the top of the conference. It means they’ve been productive and helped you win some games. It’s something he works hard on his own and hopefully it continues to do well in those categories."
Wikoff said, "I think it goes back to the team as well. We have a lot of good hitters on this team and I see more fastballs and more pitches to hit but having a good year yourself is awesome."
Brandon wasn't drafted after high school but his success this season means he could have a big decision to make.
Wikoff said, "It’s nice to know I’ve grown as a player and they realize what I can do as a player. So that’s nice, I’ve got a chance to do things I know that but it will be fun in June."
What team would Brandon like to hear call his name?
Wikoff said, "My team is always the Cardinals. I’ve been a big fan ever since I was little. My family has been Cardinal fans but whatever team drafts me if I decide to go will be my new favorite team."
What if the Cubs call your name?
Wikoff said, "Then they will be my new favorite team."
