They say diamonds are a girls best friend...and Katelyn Bushnell loves being on a softball diamond like most people love oxygen.
"It's really fun, rather than getting tired, it's really fun to hit," Katelyn said. "I think hitting is my favorite part of softball and it's fun to play."
This is Katelyn's second summer on the softball diamond. Her first season was cut short when her allergy headaches became unbearable.
"We noticed her allergy medicine wasn't working and that her headaches were getting a lot worse," said Anna Bushnell, Katelyn's mother. "She said it was a 9 and we went to the ER because medication wasn't helping it. They did an MRI that night, and that's when they told us she had a brain tumor."
That tumor was pushing on Katelyn's optic nerve, causing vision problems and leading to a six-week stay at St. Jude in Memphis, a place Katelyn loves almost as much as the softball diamond.
"I think of it as my second home," Katelyn said. "It's really nice. It has a cafe, it has ice cream, and it has a Starbucks!"
Katelyn had surgery 3 months ago that included a botox injection to improve her vision. She has to go back again in August to correct double vision. Yeah, when Katelyn plays the field, or stands in the batters box, there are 2 softballs coming at her.
"It's up and down, so it's not like side to side, and I'm really used to it," Katelyn said.
News 25: "So which one do you swing at, the top one or the bottom one?"
"Bottom, and I have a way to turn my head...I know how to move my head so it's not double vision," Katelyn said.
News 25:"How do you do that?"
"I just move my head to a certain position and it's just gone," Katelyn said.
"Not unless you really think about it, you know I don't even realize she has the double vision because the child has never complained once through this whole ordeal," Anna Bushnell said.
"To see her out on the field, it's great, because that's what she loves to do. She loves softball and she's really excited that she gets to play this year."
