State Approves Limits on Campaign Contributions

Illinois lawmakers are set to make history by approving the state's first limits on campaign contributions this weekend.
The bill has passed the Senate and would limit contributions to $5,000 a year from individuals and $10,000 from groups. But political parties could still transfer up to $90,000 a year. And there's no limit on the amount of services they can provide, such as TV time and campaign workers.
But critics call it a sham. They say the limits are too high, the contributions can be made too often and the proposal protects incumbents.

Voters may also now have the power to recall. The Illinois House voted in favor of 2010 ballot measure asking voters if they want the power to recall a governor.

The legislation comes in the wake of former Governor Rod Blagojevich's impeachment and federal corruption charges.
