No Support for Constitutional Convention

Political gridlock in Springfield has one group weary about a proposal calling for a constitutional convention in Illinois.

The League of Women Voters is urging residents to vote "no" on the measure in November. Joined by other groups today at Peoria City Hall they said the 78–million dollar price tag for holding a constitution convention outweighs any benefits.

"The special interest, current political dysfunction in Springfield and party politics may gain control of the delegate election selection process as well as deliberations. So results may be unrepresentative of voters concerns," said Mary Jane Crowell with the Greater Peoria League of Women Voters.

Supporters say the current constitution provides for an easier amendment process. They add since 1970 voters have approved 10 out of 17 amendments
