A relatively new level of medical care is popping up throughout Central Illinois.
Some Peoria–area Walgreens just started offering customers who don't feel well a chance to see a nurse practitioner.
News 25's Eric Shangraw shows you what a nurse practitioner can do for you.

Marian Parr has a master's degree in nursing, which makes her a nurse practitioner.
As an N–P, she can diagnose and treat patients with minor concerns and prescribe medicine.
Parr's office in East Peoria's Walgreens is open seven days a week. Unlike your family physician, no appointment is necessary.

"There are simply not enough providers out there to take care of everyone. So we've been popular in that we are here on the weekends and after hours. And we provide after hours care," said Jami Riggenbach-Hays, Lead Take Care Nurse Practitioner for Peoria Walgreens.

Under Illinois law, nurse practitioners can only practice medicine by collaborating with a doctor.
Dr. Keith Knepp, a family practice physician in Peoria, reviews ten percent of the cases coming through the Take Care Clinic at this Walgreens.

"I'm always available or one of my partners is if they have a case that they are struggling with. They can call us on the phone and we can give some advice. Being a collaborating physician also means I make a visit here every month to meet with them to answer questions and make sure I'm comfortable with the care we deliver here," said Knepp.

Nurse Practitioners can treat respiratory problems like strep throat; urinary tract infections, ear problems, sprained ankles and give physicals and vaccinations.
These clinics are not emergency rooms: They don't treat sever injuries, chest paints and shortness of breath.

On average a visit costs between $50.00 and $80.00.
The Take Care Clinic accepts payment from most insurance providers.
Another clinic with a nurse practitioner opens for business at the Walgreens on Pioneer Parkway in Peoria Monday.
Proponents say it's a trend in acute care sweeping the country.
