Fourteen Springfields across the country competed for the honor through a contest put on by USA Today.

Springfield, Illinois came in second.
But which Springfield is the Simpsons' town based off of?

Springfield missed the chance to host "The Simpsons Movie" premiere by 700 votes.
But Tim Farley of the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau says Springfield still came out a winner.

"We got a ton of P.R. out of this. The Mayor was on the radio today with BBC in the UK which has 13 million people who heard about Springfield, Illinois," said Farley.

Springfield, Vermont may have won the right to host the movie premiere, but the question remains: Is the fictional TV city based off a real Springfield?

News 25's Jenny Li spoke with Simpsons Writer Daniel Chun over the phone and asked him what he thought.

"It does feel like it's in the Midwest. We try to make it a quintessential American town, so as far as I'm concerned it could very well be in Illinois," said Chun.

Here's a more straight answer.

"Springfield has been on the ocean at times, it's been in the arctic, it's had a desert at times, so unless Springfield Illinois has all these things, I don't think there's any town that can satisfy the demands of the Springfield in the Simpsons," said Chun.

Chun says it's the most popular question they're asked.
Writers will at times write in references to their own hometowns, which for Chun is Poconos, Pennsylvania.
So in a sense, The Simpsons' Springfield is everywhere and nowhere.
As far as the "The Simpsons Movie" goes, here's a little bit of what to expect.

"The family does something that makes the town really angry. There is a full frontal nudity scene for the first time in the Simpsons," said Chun.

The Fourteen Springfields in the contest will all hold smaller screenings of the movie on July 26th, the day before it is released.

Daniel Chun's next episode will air sometime around the Sundance Film festival, which is where his story takes place.
