Old man winter can make driving and even walking hazardous to one's health. With the possibility of six to eight inches of snow piling up, it's no time to be careless in the car or on foot.
As the area prepares for yet another snow storm, Illinois State Police are reminding residents to be cautious when behind the wheel in snowy conditions.
"When you've got a large storm coming in like we've got, that's the first thing slow down. The other one is to just put your seat belt on before you leave the house because that's going to help you if in fact you run off the road, that's going to save you in a serious crash," said Capt.Dean Kennedy, Illinois State Police.
The City of Peoria has a plan to make sure the roads are cleared for travel throughout the slow moving storm system.
"We'll start off treating the primary streets only with the rock salt sand mix and then we'll discontinue that. We'll keep the salt on the trucks just for weight, we have to have that weight when we plow. So basically that's what we'll do," said David Barber, Peoria City Street Sewer Manager.
The City of Peoria is reminding residents that once the snow hits two inches to make sure not to park on primary roads with snow route signs.
The roads will be slick so watch your step if you are out and about.
So here are some safety tips to remember to prevent a fall.
Check the traction on your footwear.
Maybe wear boots or shoes with traction and change into dress shoes when you reach your destination.
Keep your salt and shovel in the house so you don't have to walk in snow or ice to get to it.
Carry a cell phone in case you do fall.
Slow down, when you're late and rushing you push the limits of your balance.
And don't be afraid to ask for help if you need a sturdy arm to get your footing.
