More Police Enforcement Could Be Coming

By Ashley McNamee

The Peoria Police department could be getting some law enforcement help this week.

The police chief has requested the purchase of three new specialized canines.

One dog has a specialty in explosives detection and the other two narcotics.

All three dogs would assist with patrol duties as well.

The police department K-9 unit lost its only bomb dog to retirement and two other dogs are close to retiring as well.

Peoria City Council will vote on the nearly $42,000 purchase at Tuesday's meeting.

just wondering what you posted is WRONG, they do NOT train a dog to detect both Drugs and Nitrates. If is VERY important to have an indications of ONE or THE OTHER, so get you facts straight, as yes I work a dog, but not in Peoria. As for the amount to purchase the dogs, this encludes sending the handler to the place where the dog is trained, and not for just a day, so that they know how the dog works, it is not like buying a new Squad Car, alot more complex, but then only Certified Dogs and Handlers would know. Go ahead and purchase the K9's, they will pay back 10 times over the cost or more.

You are all b****ing 42,000 to keep drugs off the streets is a good thing an how many years so we get out of these dogs for that its not like they get a weekly pay check i bet if that was a cop one time payment you would all be happy

Now everyone don't rush to judgment here. 3 K9's are about ready to retire. These 3 will replace those and they can easily make up that $42,000 thru searches and seizures. Without the use of drug K-9's, human Officers miss a lot of hidden drugs and the potential to seize many drug cars that can go for lots of money at Police Auctions.

The point that I was trying to make in my first post 12:38 AM is that there's a lot of people in Peoria out of work, struggling to put food on table and pay their bills. And yet the Peoria county board, the Peoria city council and don't forget the great Yellow God trying to cram pork barrel projects down the taxpayers throats. These "IDIOTS" are spending taxpayers money like it's going out of style on stupid projects that we don't need at this time you know like that Block/Museum, hotels, and changing the new logo for Peoria what a joke!! We need to get rid of all those Peoria county and the Peoria city council members and get people in there that knows how to spend the taxpayers money wisely and not on these pork barrel projects. Then bring back the all the police officers that was laid off than get the dogs.

I watched Friday where some guy in Pekin had a police dog walked around his car. The person tried to video tape the search and one of the officers slapped the phone out of his hand into the parking lot. The dog didn't do anything and the police said it alerted them that something was in the car and put the dog in the car. That just goes to show the police can do what they want. If the police are just going to do that, why do they need dogs? No, I'm not the guy they were searching just an honest American worker who pays my taxes and am tired of the way the government treats the people. Police should watch who else is around because the video that someone got really shows their ignorance.

I would like to know who we are purchasing these dogs from at 14,000 per dog. Is the seller of the dogs affiliated or related to anyone in the decision process?

The dogs will only detect what they're trained on and that would depend on the trainer.

Actually, "just wondering", the bomb dogs often still detect narcotics. However, more than one dog is needed to be useful on the streets. Just like a human officer, the K9s need down time as well. One is typically assigned to each shift. The ones at PPD right now are getting old. The life of a Police K9 is not an easy one. I would be willing to bet that each PPD Officer can say that he/she appreciates the K9s. They are a vital part of operations...from building searches to suspect tracks to officer security to drug and bomb detection. Though the recent layoffs have greatly impacted me personally, I know that I support the purchase of these K9s...

why don't they just train one dog to find both the bombs and narcotics? I know it can be done, that would safe at least some money, right?

I'm sure the dogs are going to really make Ptown safer! They will chase the gang-bangers, drug-dealers, thugs and muggers. Then growl at them and probably wet on the street. Give me a break PPD. Get those officers back who were laid off. The priorities of the City Hall are not in the best interest of the public

I just love the way the Peoria City Council willing to spend $42,000 that they don't have for three dogs when they're laying off police officers. I guess there are a lot of terrorists with bombs in Peoria! Watch out they're going to be raising taxes again not only will you be paying for Block/Museum now three dogs. Yea you can say your money is going to the dogs!!!
