Morton Teen Says No to the Elevator and Takes the Stairs

Who needs the stairmaster at the local gym? A Morton Teen says no to the elevator and instead takes the stairs...all 86 flights.

18-year-old Jared marks finished first in his age group in the New York Road Runners Empire State Building Run-Up.

Marks climbed 1,576 steps in a little over 16 minutes.

A cross country captain in high school, Marks says that running stairs requires more strength than endurance.

"Probably around 40 I was like oh my god--just walking it," said Marks. "There's this one part were the stairs go up and there's a walk back to the other set, and then it goes back up and you walk all the way back, so every walk I could not run that walk or I'd just collapse."

Marks is considering participating in triathalons to combine his love for running, mountain biking and swimming.

He expects to run in another stair climb race next year.
