They had just recently finished some remodeling at Crossroads Chapel in Bloomington.
"It's gone. It's bad," said Heidi Krzeminski, a member of the church since she was a girl. "There's not a lot in the sanctuary that you could even recognize."
On Friday afternoon a fire tore through the east part of the building, destroying the sanctuary. Some other portions of the church have smoke damage.
Pastor Mark Wallace is thankful no one was in the building at the time.
"Inside you're grieving the loss of it," Wallace told News 25. "You realize too that all of this is buildings and things and the important things are people and relationships."
The damage could have been worse. But as luck would have it firefighters were fighting a house fire right across the street when they saw smoke coming out one of the church windows.
"I was heading out to take super to a member of the church," said Karen Layten, who is the secretary at Crossroads Chapel. "I was headed out to take food to her house and my nephew called me. So I turned around and came back here and saw the church on fire."
Pastor Wallace says sometimes bad things happen and you have to press on.
"It's just one of those things where you have to encourage the people and work through and than just trust there are going to be better days ahead.<" said Wallace.
"We'll rally the troops and figure out what the next steps are," said Krzeminski. "We'll probably start that process at church on Sunday and start making a plan."
The cause of the fire is under investigation and there's still no damage estimate. Pastor Wallace says starting tomorrow, and until repairs are made, Sunday worship services will be held at Trinity Lutheran School beginning at 10 am.
