Kurt Wilson of Joe's Towing pulls another car out of the snow Thursday in East Peoria.

By Marc Strauss

Danny Blight of Creve Coeur tried get to work Thursday morning, but he couldn't even make it off of his property.

"I don't remember the driveway being quite as long last year," joked Blight, who got his new red Mustang stuck in the snow just before he reached the street.

Blight spent $125 to have Kurt Wilson of Joe's Towing rescue his car, just so he could park it back in his garage about 50-feet away. Wilson was only 3 hours into his shift and Blight's Mustang was already his fifth job.

"I think it's people making the effort to go to work so they can tell their boss we tried and we couldn't make it," said Wilson. "I would say the roads are getting better, but this morning (people used) bad judgment."

Winter storms are like manna from heaven for towing outfits like Joe's. Twenty minutes after helping Blight in Creve Coeur, Wilson was in East Peoria assisting another stranded motorist, Shane Van Winkle.

"I parked it here last night," said Van Winkle. "They didn't plow this road and I couldn't get up Bloomington Hill."

On days like this Wilson's job seems like it never ends.

"Right now I think we're caught up. But every time we get caught up people see that the roads don't look too bad and they jump on them and spin out."

Enough of them spun out that Wilson collected $750 in less than 4 hours.

It's a lousy day to be on the road unless you drive a tow truck.
