President Barack Obama is ordering the federal government to proceed with acquisition of the Thomson Correctional Center in Illinois to hold a limited number of terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The President's decision to acquire the prison in Thomson was disclosed in a letter by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Governor Pat Quinn and U.S Senator Richard Durbin.

The decision is an important step toward closing the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. The prison is expected to house both federal inmates and no more than 100 detainees from Guantanamo Bay.

Thomson is along the Mississippi River North of the Quad-Cities.

We'll have more on this story after a meeting between the President, Sen. Durbin and Gov. Quinn this afternoon.

Good decision, win..win..win... America will improve its standing in the world, the Feds will get an unused state of the art prison, and several people will be put back to work in a job that pays a decent wage and offers good benefits.
