District 150 Restructuring Committee members outlined their plans to transition Woodruff High School students to the other thee Peoria High Schools. The chairwoman says the goal was to minimize impact on students' district wide.
"Consequently the recommendation is to maintain the current boundaries of Richwoods, Peoria High School and Manual", said Jean Williamson.
According to the committee, Woodruff students North of Lake avenue from Sheridan Road to Peoria Heights will go to Richwoods. Students bordered by Abington Street to south of Glen Oak to Hightower will go to Manual. The rest will go to Central. Letters explaining student's relocation will be mailed Tuesday.
"To the eighth grade students that would have attended Woodruff High School and the current ninth through eleventh grade students at Woodruff", said the committee chairwoman.
It's estimated the changes will raise attendance at both Richwoods and Central to about 1500 each. Manual's 9th through 12th grade enrollment will be about 800.
Amidst community fears of conflicting rival neighborhoods, the district appointed a Safety Task Force.
"The safety concerns that we have involve money, which are going to be cameras and metal detectors, those kind of things we need to update", said Randy Simmons, a task force member.
Simmons says they've also discussed increased lighting around parking areas at all three schools. "We want to cut down entrances for our kids next year. This was a concern. For example, Peoria High School, I believe we have 54 outside doors".
Superintendent Ken Hinton says by closing Woodruff, the district could save more than two-and-a -half million dollars. Close to 40 certified and non-certified positions will be eliminated.
But Hinton says the decision to close a high school was imperative to keep the district from financial ruin.

Central and Woodruff some how gained bad reps, well woodruff had the shooting but that doesnt mean its a bad school. I went to woodruff for my freshman and sophmore year and its not a bad school, there are some amazing teachers and students there. I have no idea how Central got the rep that it has. I went there in 06 and 07 and loved it. Contrary to popular belief, there are hardly ever any fights there.Randy Simmons is an amazing principle and there are a plethora of outstanding educators there
