150 Announces New Boundaries For Woodruff Students

District 150 Restructuring Committee members outlined their plans to transition Woodruff High School students to the other thee Peoria High Schools. The chairwoman says the goal was to minimize impact on students' district wide.

"Consequently the recommendation is to maintain the current boundaries of Richwoods, Peoria High School and Manual", said Jean Williamson.

According to the committee, Woodruff students North of Lake avenue from Sheridan Road to Peoria Heights will go to Richwoods. Students bordered by Abington Street to south of Glen Oak to Hightower will go to Manual. The rest will go to Central. Letters explaining student's relocation will be mailed Tuesday.

"To the eighth grade students that would have attended Woodruff High School and the current ninth through eleventh grade students at Woodruff", said the committee chairwoman.

It's estimated the changes will raise attendance at both Richwoods and Central to about 1500 each. Manual's 9th through 12th grade enrollment will be about 800.

Amidst community fears of conflicting rival neighborhoods, the district appointed a Safety Task Force.

"The safety concerns that we have involve money, which are going to be cameras and metal detectors, those kind of things we need to update", said Randy Simmons, a task force member.

Simmons says they've also discussed increased lighting around parking areas at all three schools. "We want to cut down entrances for our kids next year. This was a concern. For example, Peoria High School, I believe we have 54 outside doors".

Superintendent Ken Hinton says by closing Woodruff, the district could save more than two-and-a -half million dollars. Close to 40 certified and non-certified positions will be eliminated.

But Hinton says the decision to close a high school was imperative to keep the district from financial ruin.

Central and Woodruff some how gained bad reps, well woodruff had the shooting but that doesnt mean its a bad school. I went to woodruff for my freshman and sophmore year and its not a bad school, there are some amazing teachers and students there. I have no idea how Central got the rep that it has. I went there in 06 and 07 and loved it. Contrary to popular belief, there are hardly ever any fights there.Randy Simmons is an amazing principle and there are a plethora of outstanding educators there

You know the teachers are under paid, under staffed and to lose a whole school is so stupid. Then you have the Dist. 150 that is building a whole new building and taking over Frye St. Plus they also have the building on Knoxville. If they stop spending money the school would never had to close in first place. Start putting the money to good use. There was a way to Manual open. Why couldn't they find a way for Woodruff? They didn't want to.

I went to Central. My boys graduated from Woodruff. Both schools are good schools. But you have people on here writing that kids have a choice where to go to school. We didn't when we were growing up and they don't now. Also, not all people, kids, black, white, yellow, green, whatever color are the same. It sounds so stupid to judge someone just because of where they live, the color of the skin. We all bleed the same. We are all born the same. We all die and go into the ground the same. GROW UP!

This for sick of slackers. I grew up in the old Warner and it was not because my mother was a slacker, she was an epileptic and had polio at the age of two. She instilled values and hard work in my brother and I and right now I am a successful attorney in Oklahoma at the age of thirty four. So before you judge people because of where they live just remember that my freshman year there was a massive drinking party and that was busted with 200 prep kids at Richwoods and alot of the kids use drugs.

This is totally stupid and it is going to hurt our kids in the long run, because everyone will be fighting. Be smart and close grade schools, my kids were boundary waivers and and they bussed them. There is far to many grade schools to close to each other and the kids would get along better at younger ages like 1-4 grades. Come on Ken, I think your great, but you are making wrong choices. Please listen to us parents

How about reevaluating bussing from the southside out to Richwoods. It's ludicrous that my Richwoods district tax dollars bring kids with zero desire for knowledge to our school.
