Police have now two men in custody after an early morning chase that left a car in the Illinois River.
Hours after escaping police, a 36 year old Peorian is back in custody..
The first pursuit of the two men ended early this morning in Peoria County near the McNaughton Bridge.
Police say this P–T cruiser along with the two men inside it intentionally went into the river after being chased from South Pekin.
Tazewell County Sheriff Bob Huston says the two men allegedly stole anhydrous ammonia to make meth.
Seventeen–year–old Mark Turner of Pekin was taken into custody at the scene.
36–year–old Aaron Slaughter of Peoria apparently swam away–escaping police
But, Slaughter was found Monday evening hiding in an attic in Peoria, and was reportedly taken for treatment at a local hospital.
Tazewell County Sheriff Bob Huston says the two men allegedly stole anhydrous ammonia to make meth. Police say the two men initially tried to swim away.
"The officers made several attempts to persuade them to swim back for their own safety and be rescued. One of the occupants of the vehicle eventually did that and he was rescued and is safe," Huston tells News 25. "The other person who was in the vehicle swam out into the channel and was last seen in the channel southbound in the river.'
Even though the car went in the water on the Peoria side of the river, Huston says the area is Pekin City jurisdiction.
Seventeen-year-old Mark Turner from Pekin is in custody for burglary, criminal trespass and tampering with anhydrous ammonia. He has his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
By boat and airplane, police spent all day searching for Slaughter.
