Salvation Army Seeks Necessities for Needy

You may have noticed familiar faces outside area businesses and with Christmas fast approaching, the Salvation Army bell ringers are out in full force.

The Salvation Army Assistant Development Director, says due to the economy, they've seen the number of area residents seeking assistance this holiday season increase dramatically.

Rich Drager says people have been rushing to sign up for the Christmas food baskets and toy drives...but more notably, he says, parents are looking for the necessities this holiday season.

"Coats For Kids is where we're seeing the biggest increase this year so far, Drager said. "Last year we gave away 13 hundred coats. Already this year we have requests for 700 and last year at this time we only have requests for about 250. So a lot more people looking for coats."

Draeger says last year, the bell ringers brought in more than $200,000.

And overall, The Salvation Army raised $1.3 million dollars.

Drager hopes to exceed that number and says despite the economy, this year, tri-county residents seem to be giving even more.

Also this Wednesday, WEEK personalities will be bell ringing from 8am until about six at the East Peoria Wal-Mart...if you're going to be doing some last minute Thanksgiving shopping, stop by and see us.

Unfortunately for those who need it, there is a bias against them because of people who have abused the system. But anyone could be in the position of needing assistance at any time. I am divorced, and raising a disabled child on my own. I am a proud person and do not like to accept help, but i will not let my child go without. I am working, but it does not always cover the additional expenses I have, and it is wonderful that people who need a little boost can get that help from these agencies.

Don't judge, when you haven't been in those shoes before. If it hasn't happened, simply count your blessings, because tomorrow it could all change for you or your loved one. I know, because it did for me not long ago and once you go under, it's hard to climb out.

you guys had the kids, you should pay for them. for the woman whos husband works 52 hours a week, thats awsome. but why are you not putting some time in too. find a job, they are out there you just have to be willing to do something you dont like besides sitting on a sofa all day. . dont give me the excuse i can work because the husband does and i stay home with the kids. thats lame. work a different shift part time.

i'd be happy to hear every pathetic story as to why you would need help like salvation army, abusing unemployment for 78 months or state aid, section 8 or food stamps. really i would email me lancetucker42@Hotmail.com

I have three children. I support them from my own pocket. Never ever used assistance. I just simply do what it takes. I keep things safe, i dont dont use credit cards. I work for what i got. if your crippled and cant work. or have kids that you cant afford daycare. then maybe you shouldnt of had them. financial planning is whats missing. people that have done this wont suffer and be a problem for the people that have worked hard in this society

To hey anonymous i have an idea: Maybe she has to stay home to take care of young children while her husband works...lots of families have to do that especially with daycare costing at least $560 a month per child...what does your wife do and do you even have children to even be able to understand the hardships parents face these days? I do not have children of my own, but I see the hardships everyday that my friends and family face.
