It was 8:30 Thursday night. State Senator Dave Koehler had returned to his Peoria Bread Company bakery at 1404 Northeast Monroe to do some painting.
But he made a mistake when he left the door unlocked. Soon a man with a gun appeared demanding money.
"I gave him what I had in my pocket. I said this is all I have. I said take it and get out of here. He wanted my phone and I said no, we're not going to do that. So in one of those split–second decisions – I'm not sure it was the smartest thing I've ever done – I went after him and tackled him and put his hand behind him with the gun and eventually pried it away," said Koehler.
Koehler, whose 60, described the intruder as black male, about 20 years old. There were no bullets in his gun, but he did manage to inflict some damage.
"He did bite me about 3 times, so I smacked him and ended up breaking my little finger. As soon as I got the gun away he ran out the door."
This is the second time Koehler's been robbed at this location. As a business owner trying to help revitalize this neighborhood he's worried the incident will have a negative effect.
"We have a business where we're trying to provide some jobs and stability for the neighborhood. Unfortunately it becomes one more reason for people not to venture into the neighborhood."
Police are looking for the man who robbed Koehler. Anyone with information about the crime is urged to contact them or call Crimestoppers at 673–9000.

Maybe this is why the mayor suggested Peoria as a test city for conceal and carry. We gotta draw the line!
