Displaced CAT Mossville Workers Get Assistance

More than 800 laid off Caterpillar workers at the Mossville Engine Facility are now eligible for extra income, training and help with health insurance. The aid comes after the US Labor Department accepted a UAW petition for Worker Adjustment Assistance.

The ruling states the workers qualify because one of CAT's biggest engine customers moved its production to a foreign country. Due to that drop in demand, CAT officials say it cut jobs at Mossville.

But, the UAW claims the work at Mossville is being shipped to a new plant in Texas, currently under construction, which is closer to CAT suppliers in Mexico.

"It's going to be a huge shot in the arm for the people that do take advantage of it. I think it's a huge win for everybody out there that's affected by this decision," UAW Local 974 President Rick Doty said Tuesday morning at Union Hall in East Peoria.

"They'll be eligible for up to 156 weeks of training with income support. It's not called unemployment but in effect extends unemployment for your approved training," Randy Stevens with the Illinois AFL/CIO says.

The aid is funded through the federal government and does not cost CAT anything. Laid off union and non-union workers at Mossville are eligible for assistance.

CAT Officials released this statement Tuesday regarding the ruling, "We hope this funding will be beneficial to eligible individuals so they can increase and enhance their skills for future employment opportunities, hopefully with Caterpillar as demand increases for our products.”

The Union is also petitioning for 250 laid off workers at Mapleton to get the same help.

It is not just Illinois. over 100 companies in Texas have filed for NAFTA assistance this year alone. Just a bit less than Illinois Companies in the same time period.

It's unfortunate that CAT is the second manufacturing jod I've lost in the last 5 years. Now with some 15 years of factory life to my credit I find myself starting all over again. I hope this program will help me decide "what I want to be when I grow up"!

In response to this post (1:03 PM Out thedoor wrote) Have you ever had to work with those people from foreign lands? Their culture is a huge clash to ours and it's down right offensive when they smell so bad that not even cologne will keep from making you puke.

I get so sick and tired of people blaming all of Cat's problems on it's production workers. Do you not realize that most of these men and women are hard workers just trying to support their families like all of you are. What, do you think becasue they are not as higly educated they are not worthy of a decent wage? What is wrong with paying them a fair wage with benefits just like the rest of you get? Do you think you are better, more deserving then them? How arrogant some people have become.

The CAT workers should adjust to the economy and trends of today rather than complain of the economy and trends of the 60's

Cat is moving the Mossville plant to Texas. This has been planned for over 2 years. Cat wants all of the work done in right to work states where they have control and no unions. The union employees got Cat where they are today.

Why would you pay someone in Peoria to administer your insurance or payroll when I am very confident a Chinese man/woman who probably has a higher degree of education and will work for not even a quarter of the wages you pay here not to mention a lot of Cat employees are already recruited from China and other countries. Cat will have no problem moving white collar jobs as well as production jobs. Most white collar Cat workers seem to think Cat cant function without them.

If you feel I am misleading you feel free to check it out I do not care one way or the other. I do agree that Cat will not manufacture product in this area much longer. They will move to the much lower paying and undereducated right to work states and if that does not work Mexico is eagerly awaiting. As far as the white collar jobs go. They will not need half of what they have now. They will find a Mexican or Chinese worker for that also. Why wouldn't they?

My brother and I are in the import export business and I assure Cat is moving more things to China than they are letting on. I know this because we are making the arrangements and that is how we make our money. It has been going like this.China or Mexico will build the product and then charge the U.S gvt. a huge tariff to bring back our own product no matter if it is Cat or anyone else for that matter but the tariff is cheaper than paying an employee here to make that same product.

You blame our economy for the down fall when actually the company is running out of town! Well maybe when the president came to town a couple years ago that was just a play to get our plant to move to his home state! Admit it CAT you are pulling out of town! Even management won't be safe eventually!

Thsi is the same program that was offered to Komatsu workers in 2003, when they bluffed everyone to believe they were going to close the Peoria plant. This is a great program for people who want to beter themselves. People will be surprised what they can learn with a little ambition. Education is the key. Bank on it.

Cat will be here forever. Unions drive away work in this area. Besides, demand for products are changing continually and they must react to those changes. It is unfortunate jobs are leaving this area. I am sympathetic to those losing their jobs, but its part of the global market that we have to deal with.
