The career of a retired professional athlete is being celebrated tonight.

82–year old Amy Applegren played for the All–American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1944 until 1953.

Friday afternoon friends and family gathered at Washington Christian Village to honor one of their most famous residents.

She was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York in 1988.

Applegren signed with the Rockford Peaches at age 17 in 1944.

She graduated from Manual High School in 1945.

"She has a good ERA. She pitched and played first base. She was just a good pitcher. She was a left handed pitcher who could throw a curve ball which wasn't easy back in those days," said friend Ruby Rudolph.

Applegren has lost her ability to communicate, but is turning 83–years old on Monday.

Friends say she still receives occasional letters from fans asking for an autograph.
