Jim Ryan Resurfaces as Candidate for Governor

By Jennifer French

After losing the 2002 election for governor to Rod Blagojevich, former Republican Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan has resurfaced as a candidate again .

Ryan is running for governor in the 2010 GOP primary.

Ryan called for a constitutional amendment in 2002 that would have limited the rate of increase in state spending.

The amendment would not have permitted the state to spend more than the rate of its population increase.

Illinois currently faces a budget deficit of nearly 9-billion dollars.

Ryan says that Illinois' government needs to curb or cut spending instead of raising taxes.

"We have been on a spending binge," Ryan says." Instead of taking natural revenue and paying some of our debts-or trying to have a rainy day fund like everybody else does-a savings account. We just keep adding new programs and spending money we don't have."

Ryan is a professor at Benedictine University.

He faces six other candidates in the republican Gubernatorial primary... including Bill Brady from Bloomington.

You sound like maybe last time around, you voted for Blagojevich. I would rather you vote for Mickey Mouse than actually have your vote count. Had we elected Ryan instead of Blago, maybe our state would not have the black eye it is currently trying to recover from.
