City of Pekin May Purchase Dragon Dome

The Dragon Dome in Pekin is for sale and has a price tag of $1.75-million.

By Gina Ford

Tonight Pekin city administrators outlined the costs to acquire the Dragon Dome and the city's plans for the facility.

City Manager, Dennis Kief says the city will be able to acquire the Dome for a million dollars, 750 thousand dollars cheaper than the asking price.
For the amount, Pekin would get the 33 acres the Dome sits on as well as the four softball diamonds and support buildings.

The city manager says taxpayers will not foot the bill for the facility, instead they will use tourism dollars. City staff say the Dome is an attraction to outside business, and they hope to add more to the facility as the years progress.

Kief says the council could be presented a purchase agreement by the November 23rd meeting.

The City of Pekin won't be clearing side streets until there is 4-6 inches of snow but, they are giving the people money for the dome? This makes no sense at all !!!!!!!

Hey, just think about the fact that the Park District who very successfully runs recreation programs said "NO THANKS" when ask to just manage the dome. They did not want to be connected to a LOSER! Bob Blackwell is the only smart one here! Read the Time Article!

To those complaining about the city not hleping the owner of Towerline with this. There is a big difference between $1 million and $5 million. So let the city have a chance at it

The dome draws visitors to Pekin and those visitors spend money at hotels and restaurants while they're here. It's a no brainer for the city to buy the dome. Good job Rusty and Denny.

I just find it funny that our government claims we are so broke and the economy is so horrible but we have 1 million dollars for a dome?!?!?!?

Something stinks....the city wouldn't negotiate with the businessman who wanted to buy it and now they are buying it...at a reduced price....Wonder if the businessman was offered the reduced rate??? I say follow the money - bet there's a trail if you look hard enough

Since when does Pekin have enough tourism to pay for the dome? The Marigold Festival is the only thing Pekin has to draw a crowd.

Epeoria, the owner of Towerline Speedway wanted the city to loan him 5 million dollars. The city of Pekin will get it for 1 million. As a Pekin resident and taxpayer, I like the second option.

This is simply an opportunity for many possiblites that Pekin cant pass up. If managed and marketed correctly it could be a positive turnaround for Pekin. Press on.

OMG Pekin would not even consider working a deal with a current business owner to acquire the property, thus keeping the Dome and his family entertainment business (Towerline Speedway)in tact, yet they now want to be the owners so they can completely drive Pekin's business climate into the dirt. Pekin needs to take a lesson from other area muni's, city gov't and business's that need to be run like business's DO NOT MIX. Get real Pekin City Council!

Why don't Pekin call Canton's Mayor Kevin Meade and ask him how The City of Pekin can just take the Dragon Dome from the current owner by eminant domain ?
