Fort Hood Shooting Hits Home For Edwards Family

Megan and Pam Cramer were in Killeen, Texas visiting Second Lieutenant Mike Cramer last week. He's stationed at Fort Hood, and the two were helping Mike move into his new home off base.

"We were basically going back in the mall looking for a few more things for the house", said Mike's mother, Pam Cramer.

That's when the atmosphere in the Texas novelty store they were visiting changed.

The Lieutenant's sister, Megan Cramer said, "It was strange, because phones just started going off everywhere, even the store phone and the lady said, 'Shooting?"

They heard rough details of a mass shooting at Fort Hood.

"My first thought was I was worried about my brother and we couldn't get a hold of him", said Megan.

With phone lines down, they tried in vein to call him, but he finally contacted them. "He says, 'okay, there's been a shooting and I'm okay and I can't come home, the fort's locked down'", said Pam.

With no way to communicate to family members back in Central Illinois, Megan turned to a social networking site, one she says was key in keeping her family in the loop.

"I learned from the NIU shooting that phones just weren't practical at the time and I could get a hold of mass numbers of people through Facebook", said Megan.

She and her brother Mike were both college seniors at Northern Illinois University during the February 2008 shootings that claimed the lives of five students- more than a dozen more were injured. "I had a floor mate from when I was a freshman who was shot", said Megan.

Megan also used social networking that day to get word to her mother in Edwards that she and her brother were okay.

Pam says she feels fortunate she was able to be there for her children through both tragedies. "With both kids, oh yeah. Going through the NIU incident, it basically happened on a Thursday, I was there on Friday".

Megan says she's fortunate her family escaped misfortune twice, and can only hope that trouble doesn't find them again in the future.

i agree with sorry to hear comment. All muslims will eventually turn against the USA. Its in their blood to hate us.

Oh yeah. My comment was obviously directed at you 'Sorry to hear'.

I'm not going to even address the extreme racial hatred of your comment. Your stupidity is even more glaring. I believe that Muslims have been "allowed" to serve in the military prior to Obama's administration, Furthermore, even as Commander-in-Chief he could not solely make that call without some serious resistance from the other branches of government. Besides, if you are so against Obama, would you really want him to have that kind of power? You are very illogical and dumb.

Obama should have never let Muslims in the armed forces although he has such a middle eastern name. The Muslims hate America and most Americans religion its completely different than Muslin beliefs which puts us in conflict immediately. They need to get all Muslims out of the armed forces and America now! They hurt us on 9/11, now this, whats next? We need to learn these people can't be trusted at all.

Our prayers and best wishes go out to you, and your family. I'm sure your children are as proud of you, as you are of them. Better days for you all!

You need to learn where commas and periods go when accompanied by quotes. The punctuation in this story was horrid, not to mention spelling "in vein" this way so it seems that the person was tiny enough to crawl into a vein and make phone calls. Come on!

It's embarassing to read this story on msn.com and see all of the punctuation mistakes and spelling errors. It's bad enough to deal with it on the local site, but to see it reiterated on a national level is ridiculous. With the number of reporters in the area dwindling due to shared facilities you would think that you would be able to be more selective about whom you hire and have people who know what they are doing. Get your act together, guys. This is why my family now watches MBD instead.
