Area veterans are being honored Monday for their service to our country.

The East Peoria Veterans Recognition program took place at the Par–A–Dice hotel.

Eighth grade students are being bused in to listen to listen to the men and women who served in the U.S. military. Organizers say many students don't understand the true meaning of Veterans Day. They are providing a "living history" the young people understand the sacrifices made to guarantee our freedom.

"Our hope is to instill in them the true meaning of the holiday. So they appreciate it. Our thought was that several of the students might not fully appreciate what the veterans have gone through and why we celebrate it," said John Ackerman, Tazewell County Board Member/Organizer.

Veterans Day is Wednesday. John Ackerman says one reason he organized the program is because most of the schools in Tazewell County will not be taking the day off.
