Mission Mart Opens in Morton

At a time when more people could use a little extra help to survive, the South Side Mission is expanding. It opened it's fourth Mission Mart location in Morton Friday morning.

The Mission Marts are the retail portion of the ministry where people can both donate and shop for used goods.

The South Side Mission's Executive Director says the Morton location set a new sales record, ringing up more than 3–thousand dollars on it's first day alone.

"We see a lot of landlords who come in looking to get furniture to outfit their house they own. We see a lot of young moms who come in and get clothing their kids are just going to outgrown in six months anyway. It makes a lot of sense, especially in this economy," said Phil Newton, South Side Mission Executive Director.

Newton estimates the four Mission Mart locations bring in over half a million dollars annually.

He says all of that money goes toward the mission's 48 programs to help the area's needy.
