Shannon Tebben–Sandoval of Pekin is pregnant with her fourth child. That makes her a prime candidate for the H1N1 vaccine. But Shannon doesn't want it.
"The H1N1 vaccine is still very new," Tebben-Sandoval told News 25. "There have not been tests conducted on pregnant women and so my gut instinct was that I wouldn’t get it. I don’t think any differently of anybody who does. I think everybody just needs to make their own decision."
But Shannon's obstetrician, Dr. Doug Harrington, is adamant that his patients get the vaccine. And during a recent check up their doctor–patient relationship became uncomfortable.
"At some point he asked me, 'If you’re not going to follow my advice on this what other things are you not going to follow my advice on?' He expressed that he was uncomfortable and I said that I was uncomfortable too. I asked him if he thought I should look for another caregiver and he told me yes I should. Then he took my file and left the office."
Dr. Harrington agreed to talk to News 25, but not about Shannon. He said he believes the vaccine is safe for women like her.
"It is not a live virus," said Dr. Harrington. "It cannot cause infection. There are no complications with it at all. It’s just that if you get the viral infection it seems to be much worse in a pregnant woman."
31 weeks into her pregnancy Shannon's looking for another doctor. But it might not be easy to find one who agrees with her. Dr. Lori Teverbaugh has been delivering babies for 8 years. She's advising her patients to get the vaccine.
"We lay out the recommendation and we give them the evidence that the CDC and the American College of Obstetrics puts out there," said Dr. Teverbaugh. "Then we give the patient the option. It’s not enforceable. It’s their decision whether they want to receive the vaccine."
Shannon has listened to the advice but says, in the end, it's her choice.

Dr. Harrington RULES ! he may be a jerk sometimes but I bet about every 1 of those pregnant women a 100% moody and well ,He is the Dr. who went to MEDICAL school who has our"us as patients" best interest at heart. I trust him 1000 over again Everyone has their own story to tell so why make it public for others to try and judge when only 1 side is being told !
