Charter School Planned for Peoria

It's a school that focuses on math, science and technology. A charter school could soon be in Peoria.

Local business and civic leaders hope the River City will get its first charter school by the 2010 school year.

Thursday night those leaders are hoping for a big turn out at the Peoria Civic Center. The Peoria Initiative is hosting a community forum for residents to get to know more about what charter schools have to offer.

The Peoria Charter School Initiative, or P.C.S.I., is a non–profit group pushing for a Math, Science and Technology Charter School in Peoria.

The P.C.S.I. has brought students, teachers, parents and administrators from a high performing Chicago charter school to talk with Peoria residents.

Officials say the last year, every graduating senior from the Chicago Math and Science Academy was accepted to a college.

With District 150 schools shrinking over the last several years, community leaders believe a charter school will help bring families back to 150.

P.C.S.I. hopes to sponsor a charter school next school year.
Officials say it will be open to all students, and admission will be determined by lottery.

Why should admission be determined by a lottery? What if my kid has more potential, but his number isn't picked? Admission should be based on grades and potential.

no actually it won't...you need to do some more research to understand the concept. The bottom line is we need to enhance the educational system in this market and this is one step towards doing that. I would love for my child (yes we are a minority family) to have the chance to go to this school. I am all for it!

Let's have a big debate and vote to close a high school next year due to budget cuts. Then a few weeks later decide we want to open up a school?!?!? Really where is that saving money.. This school will cost much more!!! Stupid
