Helping Small Business Owners Get Started

After an almost one trillion dollar bail out for Wall Street, congress decided it's time for the small businesses on main street to get some help.

Last week the house passed the "Small Business Financing and Investment Act."

It doesn't directly provide money to small businesses, but it increases the amount of money which lenders can provide to small business through Small Business Administration loan guarantees.

Local lawmaker Jehan Gordon held two workshops for current and prospective small business owners in Peoria Thursday. She said she wanted those involved in small business to know all of the free resources available to them.

"They walk you step by step through writing your own business plan. Often times there are websites out there that charge up to $500 to do what the small business development center does for free," said State Rep. Jehan Gordon, (D) 92 District.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security was on hand for the work shops as well, educating the small business owners about the tax credits available to them.
