Peoria City Council Tentatively Reduces Budget

The Crafts and Trades Union as well as IBEW agreed to wage concessions approved by council members. That means almost 130 thousand dollars goes back into the city budget.

A majority of council members also voted to refinance city debt which puts more than one-point-four million dollars back into the budget.
Councilman Gary Sandburg voted 'no' saying it's an irresponsible quick fix.

"I think there are better was than borrowing money. That's what got this nation into the problem, borrowing money and carrying debt. And then you don't have money to pay your day-to-day expenses. That's the problem and all you're doing is using the problem as the solution. A one year, one time solution, and I don't think that's appropriate", said the councilman.

AFSME and Police Benevolent union members have yet to agree on a wage freeze. And Despite a recommendation from the city manager to restore 22 city positions, six of which are police officers, council members did not discuss it. Adding positions would increase the deficit, and mayor Ardis says the council must work with the resources at hand.

As it stands, 39 city employees will be laid-off, and a number of other positions will go unfilled-filled.

Mayor Ardis says the next city council meeting will focus on how to close the remaining 642 thousand dollars of the city's 14 and a half million dollar deficit.

Let's all cut them some slack. They don't know what they are doing. It's too bad we have to suffer the consequences. Remember this the next time there is a referendum for yet another unecessary project designed to make this a better community.

I have never been very involved in local politics and guess I now see why I need to be. Are councilman trying to put a feather in their cap with the Glen Oak school project and it's surrounding area instead of providing police protection for the whole city. Which police will patrol that area when short handed already. Crime is pushing north. Is this the time to cut our protection? I will be much more involved in the next election. Perhaps you need to revote on this.

I can't believe that the city council who OK'd the budget the last few years to hire and train these qualified men to be police officers and protect not only their city but there neighborhoods can just take away a their jobs. Hopefully some day soon you will lose your jobs and see what it's like to try and survive. You should be ashamed at some of the programs you endorse instead of finding a way to protect your city.

I applaud the City Council for sticking with the tough unpopular decisions. Now go after conceal carry in Peoria, if you play your cards right this could be a new revenue stream, look at Floriday.

I personally appreciate all the support from the citizens of Peoria who I do my best to serve every day. All of your efforts should be commended. The City has made their bed and must sleep in it...it is a shame the bed they made is for the citizens. Beware there might be a criminal under it as well

The city counsel votes to cut 17 police jobs when the lead story on this website is how drugs & crime are running wild in PIA. It is not the police departments fault that the city can not manage their money and have poored money down the drain fixing up public housing projects for the criminals to live and a nicer place, ans they continue to rob and murder.
