Prescription Drug Disposal Program

By WEEK Producer

Illinois American Water has partnered with State Senator Dave Koehler, the Tazewell County Health Department and the Pekin Police Department to start a prescription drug disposal program.

A drop box to dispose of unwanted medication will be installed at the Pekin Police Department on November 5th. It will be located in the lobby of the police station.

Residents are encouraged to dispose of medication this way so the drugs can be incinerated. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends this approach and discourages flushing meds down the toilet or throwing them in the trash.

Illinois American Water is donating $2500 to the program. The company has partnered with pharmacies, police departments and government officials across the state to implement this type of program.

There is a place in Peoria where you can recycle your electronic waste. The business is called Retro-Tech on Main Street near Mr. G's restaurant. They take old TV, VCR, DVD players, computers, printers, etc.

Computer and electronic waste isn't posing as immediate a threat to our youth as having prescription pills lying around.
