The Peoria City Council will have yet another intense meeting Tuesday night to alleviate the city's budget shortfall. They're holding a special session on the budget.
Two weeks ago the council approved tentative budget cuts from many city agencies that could result in layoffs next year.
Since August, city administrators have identified more than 15 million dollars in potential cuts. Those cuts are spread out through various departments in an effort to alleviate the city's 14 and a half million dollar deficit.
Of course in the last meeting, council members restored more than a million dollars in funding to the fire department, after the department's union agreed to agree to wage freezes for next year.
But, a number of city jobs are still on the line including 17 positions in the police department, and 16 in public works.
Since the last council meeting, the Crafts and Trades union also voted to forego a wage increase for next year. If council members approve the concession, most of the Public Works positions could be restored.
The city manager is still waiting to hear from AFSME, IBEW and the Police Benevolent about possible concessions.
Because council members restored positions to the Fire Department, they must find one point– three million dollars in other savings.
The city manager Tuesday night will suggest the council consider refinancing city bonds to close that gap. We'll have details of the meeing on WEEK News 25 Nightside at 10 p.m.

Has the city counsel members taken a vote to decrease their wages? Seems they want concessions from everybody else, mostly the blue collar workers. We don't hold the purse strings but we are always the ones paying the bills that we didn't create. That's seems to be the American way any more. City counsel creates the debt and everyone else pays. Awesome!
