Toxic Chemicals in Children's Toys

By Tierney Modglin

A consumer advocacy group gives Illinois a failing grade for toxic toys and tells parents to beware as they do their holiday shopping.

The Illinois Public Interest Research Group or PIRG is testing toys for toxic chemicals.

PIRG purchased 87 toys and children's products found on Illinois store shelves and tested them for lead, bromine and other toxic chemicals.

A PIRG Field Organizer says a special type of radar gun is all that's needed to test these toys.

Illinois PIRG Field Organizer Kate Lehman says, "What we're trying to do is get laws reformed that chemicals have to be proven safe before they are in children's toys because especially with young children their bodies are developing and they're a lot more vulnerable and susceptible to dangerous effects of chemicals."

Lehman says even seemingly harmless books like this one had dangerous levels of lead in them.
