Harvest Back in Action

Local farmers are finally getting into their fields in full force.
But, it's been a few decades since they have been this far behind on the harvest.

Farmers are using a few days of sunshine to finally get into their fields.
We found this farmer harvesting his corn crop early this morning just outside East Peoria.

The state Department of Agriculture reports this is the 3rd slowest corn harvest on record with just 19% of the crop out of the ground.
It's not been that slow since 1967.

The soybean harvest is the second slowest on record with farmers not this far behind since 1941.

With a string of dry days ahead, motorists need to keep an eye out for farmers moving in and out of their fields late into the night.

I will be one of the experienced and careful drivers on the rural highways going under the 55 mph speed limit after dark...if you don't like it, go ahead and pass me...carefully, there is a reason I am going slower; I live out there and see how the deer move after dark during harvest.

I would add to the previous comment and suggest to anyone traveling be very careful not only of the slow farm machinery, but also note that deer are breeding and are quite wild at this time. The farmers will be pushing them out of the fields in which they often seek shelter and of course is their food source this time of year. Slow down!!!

It is just nice to once again see farmers out in the fields. I have been praying for all of them, both for safety and for a successful and efficient harvest.
