Starting Wednesday, October 21st, American Meteorological Society (AMS) and National Weather Service (NWS) Meteorologist Chuck Collins is joining the number one local TV news team in Central Illinois, forecasting weather on WEEK-TV channel 25, WHOI-TV channel 19 and WAOE-TV channel 59. On Monday, October 26th, five days after joining the team, Collins will take over the late evening newscasts including WEEK Nightside, WHOI News and WAOE News 25 late evening broadcasts. Veteran and revered weatherman Lee Ranson continues to forecast weather on WEEK’s Live at Five and 6 p.m. News, as well as WHOI News at 5:30 p.m.

"Chuck Collins and Lee Ranson together form a weather forecasting dream team,” said Mark DeSantis, President and General Manager of WEEK, WHOI and WAOE. “Combining the talented people and personalities of WEEK and WHOI with the top meteorologists in Central Illinois, demonstrates our success in assembling the best team of broadcast news, weather and sports professionals in the state. We are fortunate to have Chuck join us as part of our proven all-star news team that viewers and advertisers acknowledge as being the best in their fields.”

“Having two great weathermen like Lee and Chuck in the evening plus Sandy Gallant and Gretchen Wirtz in the morning newscasts makes our weather operation the best in Central Illinois,” said Content Manager and News Director Don Shafer. “The communities of Central Illinois will be well served by having these weather experts and our terrific news crew.”

Born and raised in Central Illinois, Mr. Collins has spent more than 30 years in local radio and broadcast television. The three-time winner of the Illinois Broadcaster Association’s Silver Dome Award for Outstanding/Best Downstate Television Weather holds broadcasting seals of approval from both the AMS and the NWS. For the last 23 years, Mr. Collins has worked at WMBD-TV and WMBD radio, the past 10 years of which he served as Chief Meteorologist for WMBD 31.

“After three decades in the business, I am thrilled to be a part of THE top-rated news and weather operation in Central Illinois,” said Collins. “It is a pleasure and an honor to be working with my new colleagues and a professional like Lee Ranson. I look forward to serving Central Illinois viewers for many years by providing weather for WEEK, WHOI and WAOE.”

The combination of WEEK’s expert weather forecasters, Chuck Collins and Lee Ranson, with the station's state-of-the-art tracking and dynamic interpretive equipment will enable WEEK to give Central Illinois viewers the most consistently accurate weather broadcasts available. Together with the station’s elite team of news anchors, Tom McIntyre, Mike Dimmick, Gina Morss and Jen Christensen, and sports anchors, Lee Hall and Jim Mattson, WEEK, WHOI and WAOE are committed to breaking the latest news, providing the information needed to plan one’s day and telling the stories that impact lives in the region.

In March2009, Granite Broadcasting Corporation’s WEEK-TV, the NBC affiliate for the Peoria-Bloomington, IL market, and Barrington Broadcasting Group’s WHOI-TV, the market’s the ABC affiliate, entered into a joint sales agreement (JSA) and shared services agreement (SSA) whereby the Barrington-owned station is operated from the studios of the Granite-owned station. The WEEK studios also operate Four Seasons Broadcasting’s WAOE-TV, the My Network affiliate for Central Illinois, in a similar arrangement.

Well maybe they'll start looking better with this "new set" once it's built. Also, I'm hoping that Chuck will fight for better graphics, and I'm hoping their cut-ins and their crawl are managed better with him there.

Maybe WMBD wasn't very nice to him and he IS glad to work for a competitor! He actually trained the 31 weather staff on the new system, so sorry to blast that theory. And non-compete clauses are illegal in Illinois after a contract expires, so about that lawsuit? dust in the wind...

WOW. People DO need more hobbies!! No, Chuck didn't tell 31 he was leaving TV. Gossip fills in for facts when someone keeps things private. Bob Larson didn't know what Chuck would be doing after 31, and simply said the stock sentiment anyone says when wishing someone farewell. Pretty sure he wouldn't dog the TV station he works for on purpose.

The best weather report comes from the QC. When a storm hits they cover it with radar from the QC clear thru Illinois. They even prempt regular programs to show the bad storms. NOT any of the local channels in Peoria.

I have seen Chuck Collins on News 31 before and I think he is extremely rude and arrogant on the air. What is News 25 thinking having him along side Mike Dimmick aka the nicest guy on the air?

Only in an urban heat dome can somebody like Lee look better than Chuck Collins. In years like '95,96'98'99'03&'04, when we did have a ton of severe weather, Chuck came out on top, Lee downplayed everything. Remember people? This would not play in Springfield or the QC, because their storms hold together.

31isbetter may be right. Take a look at this youtube of Chuck's last spot on WMBD. Bob Larson says Chuck is on to "Bigger and Better" things. Why would Bob essentially say WEEK-TV is better than 31??? Here's the link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vbEQWm19Lw

My brother works at 31 and apparently Chuck told everyone that he was getting out of the TV business. Did he really have to lie to people he worked with for 23 years? I hope he gets blasted with a non compete lawsuit. No one seems to care about loyalty these days. Maybe he just couldn't handle that new weather system they got over there.

I used to watch 25 but not since they took over 19. Can't stand the same people, same stories on both channels. It's ridiculous. Don't care about your "dream team", I'm watching 31!

As long as Sandy Gallant stays on the morning show, it doesn't matter to me. She is ALWAYS more accurate than the weather channel. Go Sandy!

Im sure these guys are not "predicting" the weather, they are simple reading what the computer from Lincoln IL is telling them, its 60% right and 40% wrong, how many times have you watched 31 25 19 and the weather channel and wow there for the most part the same. Lucky for them they dont get paid for accuracy.

The ironic thing is when Chuck predicts that blizzard...it usually happens. Lee Ranson is great...but he always downplays the weather to make us feel better.

"Dream Team" what a joke!! Lee Ranson is ten times better than Chuck Collins--if you want a dismal forcast, just tune in to Chuck--he will predict a blizzard when Lee is calling for flurries. I'll find another channel to watch at 10 p.m.

"Dream team" is a joke. Lee Ranson is twenty times better than Chuck collins will ever be--if you want a dismal forcast just tune into Chuck--he manages to predict a snow storm when Lee says flurries. I'll find someplace else to watch at 10.

WEEK could have garnered similar results by Keeping Ric Kearby in the first place. This, in my opinion, was a move with the primary purpose of crushing the last competitor. I know Granite would love to get their paws on operating the WMBD entity if they'd be allowed. And shame on Nexstar for just allowing Chuck to be bought out, they're doing well enough right now, they could have afforded to pay him what WEEK offered.

If they would have made Brandon the cheif meteoroligist, I would have stayed w/ WMBD. But there's something about the dweeb Marcus that I don't like and his bald spot on the back of his head freak's my wife out. Chuck and Lee, here we come!!!

'weather forecasting dream team' I would consider them a 'dream team' if they forecast weather with accuracy. 3 days out should be 100%, if that can't be done then anyone can do the weather as far as I'm concerned. They probably get their numbers from The Weather Channel anyway so save some money and tape TWC to playback during the local news.

I used to watch Peoria's forecast with a real meteorologist, who would just roar in laughter. A low front would be pointed to, but referred to as a high. And the maps would have the symbols upside down.

He's a sell out. And 25 should drop the "Dream Team" label. They should only dubb it that if they have something to back it up with. And I like how Chuck was rivals with WEEK for years, and now suddenly he's "thrilled to be a part of" his rival's news team. I'm sticking with Marcus and Brandon at 31!
