Caterpillar and an organization called Living Lands and Waters teamed up Saturday to clean up the Illinois River.

Cat employees and dozens of other volunteers gathered along the riverfront near Creve Coeur to remove garbage and litter. It's all part of an effort to preserve the beauty of one of Central Illinois' greatest natural resources.

"There’s a lot of debris here," said Chad Pregracke of Living Lands & Waters. "We’ll get hundreds and hundreds of bags and try to make it a clean spot. We’ve come here many times but we’ve never been able to get volunteers like this. The sun is out and I think by the end of the day we’ll have it a lot cleaner than when we got here."

Volunteers disposed of hundred of pounds of garbage during today's event.
Living Lands and Waters is a non–profit conservation organization based in East Moline.
