The Peoria City Council Tuesday night was wrestling with the city's budget, specifically trying to find ways to remove four million dollars in spending from next year's budget.

It was a long night for the council, dealing with the problem of laying off as many as 46 employees, most from the fire and police departments.

As of late Tuesday, the council was still discussing the cuts.

The council earlier in the night also approved a five million dollar contract with Peoria Disposal Company to pick up the city's garbage.

The approval came although city council was told the negotiating over details of the contract are still continuing.
Waste Management Company, which has collected the city's trash for some years, lost the bid.
Under the proposal presented to the city council, refuse and landscape waste collections would continue in 2010, with recyclables collections being added in April of next year.
A Peoria Disposal company official told the council he was meeting with Teamster's officials about hiring current PDC employees.
