A typical Eagle Scout project might involve clearing brush for a trail, or building a small bridge in a park. For his Eagle Scout project, 15 year–old Jon Bateman of Hanna City organized a blood drive.

Bateman enlisted the Red Cross to collect blood Saturday at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie.

Jon says he picked the project because Holiday weekends are notoriously slow for collecting blood. But the demand remains constant.

"The Red Cross is way behind in its blood collection goals," Bateman told News 25. "It’s about 1,000 units behind because that directly translates to the hospitals being short on blood. I decided there was a definite need for this in the community and that it would be a good Eagle Scout project."

John Brose feels just as strongly about the cause. He came to Bateman's blood drive to donate.

"Give it a try, it’s really not a big deal to give blood," said Brose. " I sent an e-mail out to all of the guys at work. They’re short. It’s quick, it’s easy, it’s not hard and it’s important."

Jon’s project coincides with the Boy Scouts celebration of 100 years of scouting and epitomizes the Boy Scout motto “be prepared”.
