Durbin Predicts President Will Call For Bi-Partisan Healthcare Bill

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin told News 25's Mike Dimmick Thursday that he believes President Obama, in his address to Congress next week, will invite Republicans to join Democrats in putting together a healthcare reform bill.
"It would be best if it were bi-partisan. I hope they will join us. I think it will be a better work product. But (President Obama) also going to tell us we're going to have to roll up our sleeves and get down to work," said Durbin. "We need health insurance reform so people have health insurance they can count on. We need to do something about affordability, and we've to move to a point where more Americans have the peace of mind of health insurance coverage."
While Durbin did not believe President Obama will lay out a specific health reform plan, he did think it'll be more specific then it has been in the past. "I think he wants to draw us together based on what we've achieved so far, and tell us in the next several weeks 'let's get this job done."
Durbin was also not sure if the President would call for a government insurance option. "I'm not sure (about the public option). I've talked to the president about this. He's looking for a way to guarantee competitiveness and consumer choice when it comes to health insurance. Public option is one way. If there's another approach, I think he might be open to it.
Durbin reiterated his own openness to an alternative to the public option. "I just don't want to paint myself in a corner. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get this healthcare system in America moving int he right direction.
The full interview with Senator Durbin can be seen on "Newsmakers" Sunday, August 13th on WEEK.

Do your research. Over 80% of the population is in favor of a public health care option. People who "chose" not to have insurance ARE people who can't afford it. Plus we want an OPTION not a mandate, its to keep the insurance co. honest and for them to have competition to lower premiums.

We need something to keep the insurance co. in check. They are making billions on the sick and their premiums but they deny claims!?! WTF? Where is all the premium $$ going? If anyone thinks a strong public health OPTION is socialist...go read a book and find out what socialism is before you make yourself sound any more ignorant.

You need to read the health care bills before you sign them.We do not need goverment run anything else.We need you working for the people needs. Right now your just working to get a bill passed and nobody cares about what it is going to do to the people. It is the same thing with cape and trade. If you care anything about what your job is you will read bills and vote in the peoples interest.

Why bother trying to get along with the other side, they don't want to get along. They ran this country into the ground, and now want to blame everyone else for this mess.

we need somebody in Washington to work and vote for the people. I do not want a goverment run health bill. Cape and trade is going to do us all in. You would not even vote to check into ACORN. Now I understand there is a bill SB-2099 that we are going to have to turn our guns in on yout 1040 this year. what is next you people want us to give up.I think you have all forgot when you raised your hand to not to violate the constitution right of Americans.

The way to resolve this issue is to offer the American people the exact same coverage that our members of congress have. They are there to serve us and act in our best interest, not their best interest.

I understand that many have fear over government control of anything. If we are not talking about mandatory insurance like it went with car insurance I'm all for it. We need to get this industry under control. I'm a vet. so the VA helps me but my family is poor so when my mom is sick she tries to tough it out because she can't afford the doctors or the medicine. She broke her ankle the same time I got a herniated disc in my back. A "specialist" chrg. her > $1000,she never saw him only his assist

Our govnmnt regulates who can practice medicine, sell meds, give medical tests...and has a moral obligation to make sure everyone has access to health care in this nation legally. I want private health insurance but like several million am blocked because of pre-existing. One major question: Can we form a 'hi risk' group that would be evenly split up among the ins companies so no one company is 'sunk' by all of the 'undesireable' people? I say NO pub option. Tax those who refuse to buy ins.

I pay $336.33 per month for health insurance and $20 copay and $600 for meds per month YE I am living the american dream now. And honestly I am sure senators and other politicians could truly care less about me and the rest of the diabetics in the usa.

Dr. No, I think you are smoking something. I think the majority of the people want to be able to get health care regulations in place that will allow you to get coverage regardless of previous existing conditions, that will allow you the choice of any hospital, and rules that state once covered you cannot be dropped due to illness such as diabetes, stroke etc. I don't think anyone in their right mind wants the government to run anything, only to regulate the insurance companies.

Thursday, Sep 3 at 11:09 PM Dr. No wrote ...

46 million people do not have health insurance. About a quarter of them are younger professionals who choose not to buy it. Between a quarter and half are illegal aliens. The rest are really the ones who cannot afford it. So why is government attempting to deny our individual liberty and force it upon us when they could come up with a plan to cover the 10-percent that is actually the uninsured? Because the pols want to increase their power by making us even more dependent upon government.
