Laying New Pipes

A big water main improvement project began Wednesday in the small town of West Peoria.

Illinois American Water Company is replacing four–and–a–half miles of water main throughout the Peoria district.

More than three–thousand feet of pipes are being replaced in West Peoria alone.

And the city's mayor, Jim Dillon, helped lay a section of the new pipe.

The president of the water company says the 3–point–2 million dollar investment will improve quality, pressure and delivery of tap water.

"Many of the pipes in the system were installed in the early 1900's...and are small in comparison to the modern standards which include obviously fire protection standards which we didn't have in the early 1900's," said Karla Olson Teasley, President, Illinois American Water Company.

Teasley says Illinois American is also replacing water mains where leaks occur and corrosion has damaged pipes.

The work will take place over the next year.
