Schaeferville Fire Protection District in Serious Need of Help

By Gina Ford

A local fire protection district could be in danger of going up in flames. With out-dated equipment, and no money to get new gear, they could be forced to close.

Here at the Schaeferville fire department, conditions are getting increasingly dangerous for the firefighters due to lack of funds, with worn out gear and equipment, not only could their lives hang in the balance, but also the future of their fire house.

It's been a rough year for the Schaferville Fire Protection District. Last year a fire did considerable damage to their building, and more recently, empty houses have left them searching for funds.

"The only kind of community money we get is from insurance, and some people around here may not even pay their insurance", said firefighter, Jake Barber.

And now, the volunteer firefighters are finding themselves responding to emergencies in 20-year-old worn out gear.

"You see how it's all worn out like that, it looks rubbery, and if you look in the middle here, it's all torn and rotted out", said Barber holding up his fire pants.

He says the old knee pads on his fire pants have proven dangerous for him in the past. "On my knees in it and I can feel every-thing, sharp stuff, sticks, anything, it hurts".

The firefighters say out of the 20 suits they have only about four are compliant, and most of those were purchased out-of pocket for about a thousand dollars each, and not all of the firemen have gear of their own.

"They'll grab somebody's gear that close to fits them, and they'll take it and throw it on even if it doesn't fit them right or properly", said Barber.

They say the situation with their trucks and equipment isn't much better. according to Lieutenant Mike Higgs, they're "either leaking water out of the tanks, transmission fluid, air conditioning going out, radio problems".

Barber says they' are "having problems with our thermal imaging camera, which we only have one of. Mostly just gear problems, old gear".

The volunteers respond to about 300 calls a year, many of with are in conjunction with Cincinnati and South Pekin's departments, but they worry, if they can't bring their equipment up to code, they'll be forced to close.

"We're like a family. It'd be a hard thing, a really hard thing if we got shut down" said the firefighter.

In the coming months, they hope to raise enough money to stay afloat, and continue their passion for saving lives.

The Schaeferville Fire Protection District will hold a fund raiser next Wednesday at the Culver's of Pekin from five to eight p-m. or to donate, you can contact them at SFPD.US, or give them a call at (309) 347-1734.

I wish that all you people would just get along! I for one am a Former Volunteer Firefighter and do not live in the District! Although I am not on the Department at the present time I am very concerned for the People the either are on the department or the residents in this Community! This Department does need new Fire Gear! The Gear I had in November was Good on the outside but the Lining on the inside was all torn up and I did not trust going into a fire with it at all! I think people need to

The problem sounds like the fire trustees of this district need to raise the tax levy to supply the firefighters with the equipment they need. If the fire district is not maxing out their tax rate then these guys do not need to try to have the public fell sorry for them. They need to be complaining about the fire trustees not doing their jobs instead of the lack of equipment. They sound like cry babies who don,t know what their crying about' These guys need to go to the trustees and complain.

The important thing here is the difference between a FIRE DEPARTMENT doing this and a FIREMANS ASSOCIATION. Our assoc raises money for gatherings, food, cleaning supplies, promotional stuff, education, shirts and so forth. Most departments have a tight line between the FD which uses taxpayers money and the assoc which uses their own money raised through events like Cullvers. These Vol FFs are not compensated like their neighbor depts. They do it all because they care and want to help people.

Thursday, Aug 20 at 4:30 PM Mike wrote ...

Im in the fire service as well. I think that the Chief needs to just deal with his two members and then let there be rest. Every FD is struggling right now. This one needs help. They are doing their best. The guys that did the interview were trying. They got a few things messed up, but they were trying. Maybe press conferences should be left to the public relations officer or chief. Grants are harder to get & fundraiser are slow to produce. If the association is doing this good luck!

You publicize a fundraiser to get more money. $9,000 does not go real far with fire equipment, as was stated by myself and other folks below. That's why it's publicized, and deserves to be...My guess is that the pot stirrers are from paid departments or departments that don't care as much about their folks or don't care to put forth the time and effort to actually get needed equipment.

I am on a neighbor dept and know many of these guys. I am aware that they have newer trucks, however the trucks need equipment. 30 FF's cannot share 8 sets of gear from a grant. Many have purchased their own gear. The Chief has made large improvements with this department since taking over. He delt with a fire and YES he had it investigated by the state. They did not burn down their fire station. They were not out of service like this news station reported last year. People need to chill.

Thursday, Aug 20 at 11:31 AM Tim wrote ...

In regards to " U can't fool me" he is very mistaken. The 2004 grant allowed 8 sets of gear, not everyone. File an FIA with the Chief and get your facts straight. File another one and get more info. They did run almost 300 calls last year. People need to get their facts straight and not pay attention to the trash & unsubstantiated rants of this site. Like I said before, the "communications tower" was an insurance claim.

Ok then, maybe WEEK Tv did edit some footage. Maybe you need to read the article above a little closer. They don't run 300 calls a year ! They got brand new personal protective equipment for everyone on the department at the time 4 years ago thru FEMA,along with SCBA's. They recently bought a new communications system. Almost every department trucks leak. And they're not going to get shut down ! The media only reports what you tell them. The facts above are misleading to the public.....SIR !!

Here's some facts. The probationary period for the dept in question is 6 months. One of the guys has been on a year, and, well, if you watched closely, one is a Lt., so I don't think he'd be a "proby" either. Fact: both were briefed by the Chief on his mobile phone prior to this interview. Fact: some parts edited out perhaps should not have been by WEEK.

Thursday, Aug 20 at 10:41 AM Aaron wrote ...

Regardless of approval or whatever else, if these characters were/are on their probationary period, it's not much surprise at all that they don't have good gear. You have to earn that for when you actually deal with real fires and participate as a full member. It's ALWAYS been like that. Regardless, I myself will continue to help neighboring departments as we, the volunteers, are a dying breed. So many folks are quick to judge, yet they will not step up to the plate and put in the time.

OK ! This is getting out of control. We are arguing through the comment section. I've been a volunteer firefighter for 25 years. The taxpayers of Schaeferville pay for fire protection. That money pays for new trucks, personal protective equipment and fire fighting equipment. Schaferville fire department funds are low. Which is supported by fundraisers & donations. Maybe some of you should join your local volunteer department. To see how it reallt works behind the scenes. Instead of assuming !

I am sure they are having $ issues like the rest of the world but WEEK/Gina Ford need to dig a little deeper into this to present a complete and accurate picture

They bought brand new tearnout gear,SCBA's with a FEMA grant about 4 years ago. They would average about 60 calls a year not including mutual aid. They installed a new communications system recently. And their trucks are less than 15 years old. I guess they better check their records a little closer !

What percentage of the money is culvers going to give to the fire department? Cause I would rather just give them money instead of just part of my money going to you guys. Also I know tuscarora had a bunch of gear donated from a department in the chicago aread. Maybe you guys should look into something like that. Just an idea. Hope to see you guys around still, I was at the thornz fire in creve couer with you guys. Good group of guys. Good luck!

I hope my son with a disability that makes spelling and grammar difficult never comments on here. God forbid, because it's too difficult to just move on from such a post.

to finish what I was saying cause this machine for some reason cuts comments in half. Our guys in Fulton County are getting by only because there are enough of us who either have insurance to pay for the help or when someone passes away many times pepople ask for no flowers and for any thing that people want to contribute to be given to rescue squad and fire departments. I know this for a fact bewcause I have been one of many volunteers to try and help them meet all the qualificati

But in Fulton County we have a group of individuals who ran on a Democratic that are liars and are not Democrats but are Republicans and when the money was sent out from Springfield the Fulton County Board took the money and none was given to help support the Fultoin County Fireman so they make ends meet on pe
