Heartland Christian Fellowship in Groveland has opened a food pantry.

The church will make food baskets available once a month to those in need.
About 50 people made picks ups on Saturday, thanks to donations by Midwest Food Bank, local grocery stores and donations from congregants and other churches.

Zachary Metcalf of Pekin appreciated the helping hand.

"I've been looking for a job for the past few months," said Metcalf. "Unemployment doesn't really help that much. It pays the bills but it doesn't help get me a lot of food like this to make it through the month. This really helps out a lot."

Pastor Michael Turner says gestures like this are what his church is about.

"We're trying to supply as much food as possible to people that are without jobs that are hungry," said Turner. "The vision of this church is to be able to feed the hungry both spiritually and physically."

Heartland Christian Fellowship's next food bank giveaway will be Saturday, September 19th, from 10 am to noon.
