Illinois state police say the driver involved in a fatal crash on Route 9 Sunday night had been drinking.

Illinois State Police say 37–year old Kimberly Cheney of Lewistown was traveling on Route 9 near Airport Road in Canton just before six o'clock when she struck two cars and two pedestrians walking in the road.

Cheney first clipped 38–year old Thomas Hedden's truck and then veered toward two men
.
49–year old John Stevenson of Rutland and 56–year old Gary Baker of Minonk had parked their vehicle along the road and were walking when hit.

Police say Stevenson was pronounced dead at Graham Hospital in Canton. Baker is in critical condition at OSF Saint Francis hospital.
Hedden suffered no injuries.

Police say Cheney was arrested for DUI and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

All "driving while texting" people should be jailed. They know it's dangerous, it was their intent to do it, therefore if they hurt someone then that means that was their intent as well.

Why is it that whenever you hear of an alcohol related crash, the drunk driver always lives and it is the innocent bystandards life that is taken, and their family is left to deal with that.

To those few that think that "everyone drinks and drives," I would venture to say that you have a serious drinking problem. Most people are law abiding and have a sense of caring about those around them. (And know how to drink and have a good time without putting others at risk.) I think the present laws are fine. It is the sentencing that needs revision. If you drink and drive, you have shown your judgement cannot be trusted, andyou lose your driving privIleges for life. PERIOD.

Saying that a large portion of the population doesn't drink and drive is just being in denial. To combat this, there needs to be an intoxilizer in EVERY car for EVERYONE.

Intent-"Yes officer. I did intend to shoot randomly into a crowd of people. But I never meant to hurt anyone. I'm sorry, please forgive me." BS! Everyone knows the possible outcomes of their actions-ESPECIALLY driving drunk. I am so sick and tired of everyone trying to baby those who knowingly do something as ignorant as drunk driving.

She intened to drink and drive. She did not, however, intend to hurt anyone. She should be punished, but punished accordingly. Put a lifetime restriction on her driving, where she has to use an intoxilizer. That would greatly reduce a repeat.

Yes, this is tragic. However, just about everyone drinks and drives at some point! I'm not saying it's a great idea. But whenever something like this happens all the commenters on here act like they've never done it. I'm sure this is where all the golden children speak their minds, and everyone here is perfect. This was tragic, remember and celebrate the victims of this in the manner you see fit. Just don't be hypocritical and condem this lady as the devil incarnate.

There needs to be some tougher laws for drinking and driving, then to hurt someone else means a tougher sentence. There have been too many accidents with deaths lately. The solution-not sure except to make tougher laws.
