Hepatitis A Victim Speaks Out

A Kappa woman is speaking out tonight after she was infected by Hepatitis A after eating at a McDonald's in Milan.

Karie Fiegel and her 14-year-old daughter contracted the infectious disease after eating chicken sandwiches from the fast food restaurant in early June.

Hepatitis A is most commonly spread through the fecal-oral route.

Fiegel says she was told the person preparing their food had not washed their hands after going to the restroom.

She says neither she nor her daughter are contagious now. After weeks in the hospital her life is returning to normal.

"I missed about two weeks of work, I'm trying to figure out how I am going to pay my bills for the month," she said.

Fiegel says the disease has changed her eating beahvior as well.

"The fact that I am immune for the rest of my life doesn't mean I am going to eat at fast food joint again, because I wont."

Rock Island County Health Officials estimate more than 4,000 people received preventive shots after the outbreak.

An attorney out of Seattle is representing at least one patron and is seeking class action status.

Fiegel says she will not be a part of that lawsuit, but may try to have her medical expenses covered.

I mean they endangered public health by going to work sick and by not washing hands. Don't health dept have licensing requirements for them and rules about sanitation? Is that criminal violations?

Is it possible that criminal charges could be brought against the person (people) who failed to follow basic handwashing hygiene rules at the establishment?
