City Council members are examining what the city can do without —now that Peoria is looking at an eight to ten million dollar budget deficit for the end of next year.
Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis says, "We're a long way from the budget being passed. The things that we're looking at right now are things that will help us minimize the eight to ten million dollar deficit that we're looking at next year."
In order to save money, Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis says it may mean eliminating some city services and charging more for others...services like picking up yard waste.
One area resident isn't happy about the possibility.
Area Resident LaVeeta Ricca says, "I'm also worried about the garbage collection where they're thinking about maybe not picking up the leaves that would be...or making you pay that wouldn't work anywhere."
Despite the new budget proposal Mayor Ardis still says it's better here.
Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis says, "Our economy in Peoria is more stable than a lot of other cities across the country."
Beyond some cuts in services, not–for–profit organizations will likely lose money as well.
Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis says, "It's nice when the economy's good and we have strong revenues coming in to be able to support those organizations but in times like these you have to provide the core services to the citizens, your public safety and roads and so on, first."
The Council is holding a series of meetings next week...to hear what Peorians want cut—–or saved.

I think that its not fair that we have to pay for garbage pick up per can. We already pay for garbage collection in our water bill and on our property taxes. They need to find another way to get the money.
