Sparland Residents Resist US Cellular Tower

Some Sparland residents are fighting to keep a cell phone tower out of their backyards.

US Cellular wants to put a 258-foot tower on this property near the intersection of Main and West Streets.

Three other towers including one for the water system currently stand on the property.

Residents say there were built before Marshall County officials established zoning requirements.

They added with a larger tower potentially coming that could create a precedent for other residential areas.

Michael Durham, who opposes the project, said "We have information off the computer, showing the more towers you have in close proximity, the more danger you have of the signals of radiation and what have you that comes off these towers."

Since I've been here there have been 8 homes built completely, reconstructed or had work done on them and just in a two block area. So I expected this to be a community that I could invest my future with.

Recently the Marshall County Zoning Board of Appeals approved a permit for US Cellular, which also wants to put towers in Varna and outside Lacon.

County board member Justin Meierkord says he wants to hear more information about the project and plans to vote against it.

The full county board will vote on the project tomorrow morning.
