The Bloomington community is still in shock Wednesday after the death of a 10–year–old boy.
The McLean County Coroner says Travell Arrington died from severe head injuries after being hit by a semi.
Balloons and markings on the cement are the only reminders of Tuesday's tragic accident at the Pilot Truck Stop on West Market Street.
"It was an emotional scene, traumatic, people were pushing past the tape trying to get to the boy," said Bloomington Police Spokesman, Duane Moss.
Bloomington Police say Arrington and several friends were racing across the truck stop parking lot. A semi struck and killed him.
The driver was not ticketed and has been released.
"I don't know that there's any evidence that this was anything but an accident," he said.
Neighbors and local business owners say the truck stop has nearly doubled in size in recent years.
Kathy Brown owns Brown's Produce about a half–block from the truck stop. She says there are hundreds of trucks coming in and out of the truck stop daily.
"It was one of those things we have been talking about for years, something is going to happen, we never thought it would be a fatality," she said.
Brown was one of the first on the scene. She brought a blanket to cover the boys body.
"Whether the child was at fault, it was just devastating, it was a child you know, it was just hard," she said.
She hopes this tragic accident will bring changes.
"Maybe the city would look at this problem down here and the families will talk and say maybe we shouldn't let our kids ride our bike down there anymore," said Brown.
