Roanoke Family Mourns Tragic Loss

The Woodford County Sheriff's Department is investigating a holiday weekend accident.

The Sheriff says 60-year-old Steve Hodel died and three others were injured after a woman accidentally drove her car into a crowd following the town's fireworks display Friday.

Ruby Kennell , 85, was issued a ticket for failure to reduce speed.

It is unknown if she will still be allowed to drive.

The Woodford County State's Attorney Mike Stroh says he is awaiting the results of the Sheriff's investigation to determine what, if any, legal action will be taken.

Despite the tragedy, the Hodel family says they are at peace with what happened.

"He was just happy that day, he was joking and laughing," said Joyce Hodel, Steve's wife.

Their fourth of July celebration quickly turned into a nightmare Friday night.

As the fireworks finished, Kennell backed out of a parking space, but instead of hitting the brake to avoid the crowd behind her, her foot hit the gas.

"All of the sudden we were flying out of our chairs, I remember the tires on my legs, and then when everything calmed down I remember seeing someone under the car," said Hodel, who was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Joyce and her three daughters say the accident is tragic, but they view the loss of their father and husband as a part of God's plan

"There are no hard feelings, we forgive her, there is no blame," said Hodel, who met with Kennel privately Monday morning.

His Oldest daughter Katie Mueller, 28, says what's important now is remembering him for how he was.

"He would give anything, do anything, to make his wife and girls happy, that was his passion, that's what made him happy," said.

"He would sit here and say, if the accident was going to happen, lord take me, take me and leave everybody else," said Hodel.

Now the family and friends he left behind will try to move forward without him.

You have to know the situation and the person and all that surrounds this story to know how Steve was a wonderful person and how Ruby was a wonderful person and we are community that has to live together and get past this and how can we get past this without forgiveness. As I know it, Ruby has voluntarily given up her license For a person over 81, you have to get your license every year in a driving test. Please remember the guilt she must feel and the lives that perhaps he saved by being under

give me a break. some of you sound like she accidentally dropped and broke a dinner plate at thanksgiving dinner! RUBY KILLED SOMEONE. that someone was a father, a son, a bread winner for his family, a human being. ruby just proved to everyone she is too old and stupid to safely drive. i say take her license away before her next victim is a relative of one of us.

the old people that drive are not only safer drivers but they use their heads when driving, go to the state and ask just how many teens (drunk or on cell phones)are dead or injured and then ask about the eldery

would you morons rather i said old people should be executed at a certain age. Its true. I only said put them all in homes to sound more humane. Old people are a burden & nuisance to society. Why put up with them? The lady should of been convicted & given the death penalty for taking a life.

We forget. Driving is a privilege, NOT A RIGHT!! Just because she has never had an accident does'nt mean she should have been given a license!

shame on all of you who judge all the elderly and put them in the same basket. i know a spritely your 85 year old who lives int the country and would be lost without her license. Put them in a home after 70? rediculous! Accidents do happen no matter what age you are.

Ruby has been working the same job for almost 50 years without an accident. YES THIS IS A TRADGEDY, but do we convict a person for making a mistake? We should be praying for everyone involved. Ruby is a good women, and I know she is going through hell right now. God has already forgiven all of us for all of our transgressions, don't you think we should forgive Ruby?

My mother took a test 2 of them this last year. She is 84,had open heart surgery and has strokes. The state passed her but my brother and I did not. We took the keys to the Van away. The Van has not been sold yet but it has no plates on it and my mother cannot get to it. Better to be safe that sorry!!This woman is very very lucky to have family that will forgive, like this so very easily, it is unusual and for everyones good should not be let go,this woman needs to loose all driving privleges

why 20 to get a licence, to place a burden on mommy and daddy for their kid's first few years of adulthood, there are quite a few teens that move out at 17 and how the hell are they going to get around. old people should have an agility test to see that they are capable of reacting in a decent amount of time, i believe the graduated licence program illinois has is fine for younger people though.

Why wasnt the old woman revoked of her license & charged with involuntary manslaughter?

THough after the age 70 or 75 they should just plain take away driving rights for the elderly. THey drive too slow, cause accidents. They need to be in homes where a bus can take them places & keep them from driving. Take away their licenses & keys will make the world a better place. PLus the age to drive should be lifted to 20 to get a license & 70/75 to have it revoked.
