Boats docked at the East Port Marina in East Peoria. They will not be out on the water this Memorial Day weekend because a 180-mile stretch of the Illinois River is closed.

By WEEK Producer

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources would like to remind boaters to stay safe on the water this weekend.
Here are a few tips.

Always wear a personal flotation device.
Almost 80 percent of deaths in Illinois boating accidents could be avoided if the person was wearing a life jacket.
Know your limitations.
Do not boat in conditions you are not comfortable with and stay alert of your surroundings.
Do not operate any water craft while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
And anyone could use the practical lessons learned from an Illinois Boating Safety Education Course.
