Grilling Safety Tips

By WEEK Producer

Grilling out is probably something many will be doing this weekend.

Outside our studio Friday morning we grilled out for the holiday.

It's important to be safe when you are doing that. Pekin Fire Chief Chuck Lauss has some tips for our safety.

"And then one of the things that we want to try to stress to people is that this is a good time to be able to be out with family, with friends, with loved ones, to be able to enjoy grilling out together and just be careful with it. You know you're going to be around a hot grill, you know with the kids we always stress to have a little spray bottle of water around. If that grill flares up a little bit you can spray a little water on top of it to get that flame cooled down, but if it doesn't, just close the grill lid and that takes care of it," said Pekin Fire Chief Lauss.

The Pekin fire chief also says it's important to clean the grill often.
Make sure it's at least 10 feet away from any building or anything that could catch on fire.

And be careful when you are using lighter fluid and don't wear lose clothing.
