Fewer Americans Travel This Holiday

By WEEK Producer

The number of Americans traveling away from home this holiday has dropped to a three–year low of about 37–million people.

That's down almost 2–percent from last year, according to the triple–A auto club and leisure travel organization.

Triple–A cites the weak economy as one reason more people are opting to stay within 50 miles of their home base this weekend.

While gas prices have jumped about 9%, nationally, from May's Memorial Day weekend, they are still down 35–percent from July 2008.

88–percent of July 4th travel is usually done by car, says triple–a, and open roads illustrate a near 3–percent drop in auto travel from last summer.

Maybe the fact that the 4th was on a Saturday had a little something to do with it, too.
